Porcelain Bridges, Crowns and Fillings

Porcelain Crowns

Did you know that the loss of just one tooth has a “domino effect” not just from each side of the missing tooth, but also top or bottom?

Before you enter the inevitable cycle of losing even more teeth, why not restore the natural function of your mouth with fixed prosthetics (crowns and bridges)?

Sometimes, a tooth is so badly damaged that a crown is the treatment of choice in order to save a tooth. A crown is made which fits over the top of the remaining part of the tooth. If the crown is well made, no one should be able to tell the difference between the crown and your real teeth.

Porcelain Bridges

Sometimes, it is impossible to save any tooth structure, and there is a gap of one or more teeth, or maybe several teeth in close proximity that are missing. In these cases a bridge can be constructed. The bridge is anchored to the surrounding tooth on each side of the missing tooth (teeth) and in this way the gap is closed (or bridged). In this way, the gap is closed, the bite is stabilised, and with good hygiene, the result should be not only aesthetic, but also long-lasting.

The below photographs show examples of Bridging Techniques being used together with Bonding Techniques and/or Veneers and/or Whitening Techniques to improve the overall appearance of the smile in general.

Porcelain Fillings – Inlays

Another valuable use of porcelain for the cosmetic dentist is in the making of porcelain inlays. This is particularly so when a filing is quite large, but not large enough to warrant the making of a crown. It is also an excellent alternative to mercury or amalgam fillings.

  • May Corrode (darken)
  • Can require extensive removal of tooth structure.
  • Often expand with time, fracturing the tooth at a later date.
  • Decay can develop under the filling material. (Decay under the dark filling cannot be seen)

  • Attractive tooth colour.
  • Preserves more of the natural tooth structure.
  • Bonding actually strengthens the tooth.
  • Metal-free: no “metallic” taste.
  • No second visit! No temporaries
