What is a Dental Veneer?

Dental veneers are one of the most successful ways of transforming average looking teeth into a glamourous, beautiful smile.

There are 2 main types of dental veneers:

  1. “Composite” veneers
These are made using high strength, tooth-coloured filling materials that are bonded directly to the tooth surface.
The colour is chosen by the dentist, taking into account the wants of the patient and the patient’s skin and hair colouring.
They are suitable for some situations and can last for around 4 to 7 years, depending on the bite, oral health, home care and wear and tear.
Composite veneers can last longer and in the short term cost less than porcelain veneers, but they will start to lose their lustre and can wear, much like a normal composite filling.
  2. Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are made from thin facades of tooth-coloured porcelain, constructed in a dental laboratory, and then cemented to the teeth as a completed veneer. Porcelain veneers will often last for 10 years or longer, again depending on the bite, oral health, home care and wear and tear.
In our office, we construct a “trial smile” for you to wear home whilst the actual porcelain veneers are being made in the lab. This allows for you and the dentist to assess the smile and fully customise any changes to the shape, colour, bite etc, before the veneer itself is completed in the lab. Davis Laboratory, a leading Australian owned dental laboratory right here in Penrith, provides a courtesy consultation, where you will receive a personalised colour and shape-matching consultation by their lead ceramist, at no cost to you, thus providing a beautiful, individualised result.

Over the next few weeks, we will discuss other aspects of veneers, such as the cost of veneer systems and what you can expect the process to be like once you make the decision to have your smile transformed with veneers.

Best regards
